TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.
black wolf 3/4 self inflating mats
Hello all was just wondering if anyone has had experience with black wolf mats. Looking at the 3/4 ultra lite. Its 3.8 cm high while others are apparently 2.5 cms. Are these mats going to be a good night sleep. And are black wolf products in general any good as I see they do tents too.
Thank you.

I don't know the specific product but I would say Black Wolf is generally middle of the road products. R 3.1 is fine for non snow conditions, 400 grams reasonable weight and $99 reasonable price. Comparable product say NeoAir XLite Sml - R 3.2, 230 grams double the $$s.

What's an Exped Synmat UL worth these days?

I would recommend trying to see one in store, even if you have another supplier in mind. Lay on it, with something under it, like some small rope, or whatever. then you'll know if it will actually cushion anything, or if it will be a princess and the pea type deal. no ground surface will ever be as flat and even as we'd like. 3/4 mats aren't for everyone.

For that price, and weight, I wouldn't bother. It is effectively a low end mat with a Black Wolf logo (not a particularly good brand anyway). Also, 3.8cm is a bit thin when the big players (Thermarest and Exped) are 7cm+ these days. Spend a little bit more and you will be rewarded with a much better nights sleep IMO.

I upgraded my thin foam mattress to an identical, but full length Black Wolf about 5 years ago.
It was definitely a better night's sleep than the foam, and was warmer, but didn't last long in my kit - because as Strider says, there's a lot better products on the market.
The biggest problem with mine was the packed size. Was cumbersome to roll and took up way too much pack volume.
If you can afford to stretch the budget, get a Neoair. Twice as much height, up to 50% warmer depending on model, comparable weight... And packs down to the size of a coke can.

Wow. Not cheap. Xlite is $250. Do u think this will do for Australian conditions. Not planning on sleeping in snow but it could still get to just below zero. Or do I need their big one.
thanks

What about something like this
http://www.mainpeak.com.au/hike-camp/sl ... t-ul-7-lw/
its a bit heavier but the non long wide version should weigh less. You can probably get it cheaper as well I just posted the link as it was the first one I found...
I would have thought that for anything less than snow use this would suffice and is 7cm thick so would be much more comfortable...
