| We are looking to move to the Richardson area and wanted to get some additional information about the schools. We have a 2 year-old and hope to stay in the house we buy for a long time. We have been looking at homes around the Bowie, Brentfield, Mohawk, Canyon Creek and Prairie Creek elementary schools. Are there any differences between the elementaries that we should be aware of? Also, I know they feed into two different middle schools -- what are the differences between Parkhill and Richardson North? Also how involved are the families in the schools? About Richardson in general -- what are the pros and cons of living there, especially the areas that feed to Pearce? Thoughts on crime? Local activities for families? Any information would be helpful! Thanks! |

| Honestly, I can't think of any cons of living there. No place is perfect, so I'm sure there are some, but its a really nice place. Richardson is an inner ring suburb, so the bulk of its housing is older. They have a lot of community events such as Wildflower Festival. The schools are good, and you would be hard pressed to find a more diverse place. |

| Hi there, Welcome to Richardson! My husband and I grew up here and went to school here as well, so we know the area pretty well. Canyon Creek is the newest and most affluent area of Richardson. Richardson was founded in 1925 and most of the construction here is from the 60's and '70's. Canyon Creek is one of the few areas in Richardson that has new construction - which is very rare! There are new townhomes and some new homes in that area. There are also some homes built in the 80's in that area and a creek that some of the homes back up to with glass walls in the back and huge decks that look over them which is a really nice treat for the kiddos to play on. The areas that feed into Pearce are generally on the nicer side of town. The area that's called "the Reservation" that has all the Indian names is also a nice area. Sherrill Park area by the golf course is another nice area. As far as homes go, depends on what you like. Richardson Heights is a good area as well, but typically older construction. There are some homes there that have been scraped and new homes have been built on the lots. They are also building a "work/live/play" loft area at Campbell and 75 now and should have some inventory available by June timeframe this summer. There will be restaurants, shops and services all available in one spot and it's right on the DART rail so you can hop on and go downtown easily if you need to. There are sooo many things in Richardson for families to do - especially in the summer! Cottonwood Artfest, Wildflower Festival at Galatyn Park, concert series in the Park all summer long, Richardson Symphony concerts at the Eismann Center, YMCA day camps, about 10 minutes away is Addison where they have Kaboom Town on July 3rd for 4th of July festivities, story time at the library, the list goes on. There is a little newspaper they print out and send to the citizens each month. In the winter, there is a Winter Village at the Library parking lot where kids can go visit different villages and do crafts and learn about different things, sit with Santa, have hot cocoa, etc. It's a blast! The nice thing about Richardson, too, is that it's so built out that everything - grocery stores, Lowe's, Home Depot, movies, car repair, dry cleaners, restaurants, parks, - is close by. You don't have to drive and drive to get places and spend lots of gas money. Last edited by Jammie; 05-24-2008 at 10:25 AM.. Reason: deleted realtor advertising and sent DM |

| Add a 3rd junior high - Westwood. Bowie students get to pick between Parkhill and Westwood and then pick between Pearce and Richardson. Bowie and Brentfield and all of their students are in the city of Dallas. Brentfield is probably the most awarded elementary school in the district. Canyon Creek and Prairie Creek are little bitty schools - like 2 sections of every grade, some grades have only had 1 section. Mohawk has always been a strong school. The Reservation neighborhood and the JJ Pearce Addition neighborhood feed into Mohawk. I like both neighborhoods. Bowie's neighborhoods are (1) Estates West (which is technically part of Richardson Heights although it is in Dallas), (2) Highlands North which are nice houses in the 3500 sq foot range with duck ponds, (3) half of Holiday Park swim/tennis community and (4) a neighborhood called Prestonwood East. Brentfield has the original Prestonwood neighborhood and then I think Prestonwood Meadows or something like, and Hillcrest Estates, I think. I'm a little fuzzy on some of that area. There are more neighborhoods that feed into that school. Parkhill is mostly upper middle class kids, large Jewish population, mostly white, very academically competitive. Westwood is actually a magnet school, very diverse, racially and economically, but the school is Recognized with many strong teachers and strong supports for the kids. I think every kid is required to be in at least one extra-curricular activity. About 8-10 years ago, Westwood was struggling and so the district focused a lot of attention on it to good result. I don't know anything about North. Generally, parents are quite involved. I have had parents tell me that each of these junior highs, plus West Jr High each take some of the RISD Academy and Buckhair (?sp) kids from the Coit and Spring Valley area - mostly poor hispanics. The parents tell me some of these kids are a real problem. That area lost their junior high when they converted their junior high (Northwood) to RISD Academy which is 2nd-6th grade, so they have to be bussed to the other jr highs. Come to think of it, folks who live in The Reservation may have choice between Mohawk or Arapaho Classical Magnet Elementary (they wear uniforms) and then between North and West junior highs and then between Pearce and Richarson. West Jr High is right next to Richardson High. Trust me, it's nice to have a choice depending on your children's personalities. It's not unusual to have sibs in different schools based on their personalities. Pearce is mostly white, upper middle class, academically competitive. Richardson High is more diverse and has a long, long history. Most parents buy homes specifically to be in Pearce attendance zone, but then birth a child who would fit in better at Richardson. |

I remember it when I was in elementary when a relative was on the RISD school board. I took my SAT at Richardson HS and that was in the early 80's. |

| Also don't forget that Richardson is located close to UTD and SMU. That means when it comes to college time that kid doesn't need to waste thousands living on campus or renting an apartment. |

I just remember that at the end of junior high we could choose to go to Berkner (which was the school we typically feed into) or Richardson. I guess maybe just the enrollment there was low or something, but for some reason I remember it as being newly opened...I guess it was in some ways...new "opened" for us...haha! Thanks for clearing that up |
